Trip looks at exploring the Ancient community of Ghana in the historic town of Elmina
Put simply – expect a good time!! From start to finish there will be banter, laughter, new sites to explore and mini-adventures. You will have a wonderful and experienced team who will be available 24/7. What we expect is for your mind to be open and sense of adventure on high alert
We will depart from Accra at 0800hrs and head to the Central Region. Arriving in Elmina we will check in our accommodation at Stumble Inn. We will have lunch and head into town proper. We will Elmina Castle – the oldest European building in existence below the Sahara, Fort Jago and the 17th Century Dutch Cemetery. There will be a walking tour of this ancient community. Depending on our time we will go canoeing on the Benya Lagoon and into the magroves to birdwatch fascinating West African Birds.
Today we will witness the Edina traditional Bakatue – the opening of the Benya Lagoon into the sea which symbolises the beginning of a fishing season which is the main livelihood of the people in of Elmina. The splendid ceremony of this amazing, wonderful and ancient festival includes varieties of activities such as durbar of chiefs, a colourful regatta of canoes on the Benya Lagoon and processions. There will also be a solemn “net casting” ceremony which symbolises the beginning of a new fishing season and a catch will be offered to the deities of the traditional area and other activities. We will have dinner and go for live music concert.
